The Ashes: How The Odds Look Now

November 27th, 2013 by G Waldorf

What a first Test! There was plenty of talking before the game, and on the first day there were worrying signs, but from Brad Haddin’s knock in the first innings onwards, it was Australia doing all the walking, and in the end it was a Mitchell Johnson performance that has got Aussie cricket fans more excited than they have been for a long time. So, to the next Test in Adelaide with a 1-0 lead for Australia, and for England no shortage of problems to address. We couldn’t have hoped for better.

Or could we? There was so much to get excited about in the Gabba Test that we’re happy to overlook Steve Smith’s technical troubles, and George Bailey’s underwhelming debut – or, in fact, a fair few of the dismissals in Australia’s first innings. But what are the odds looking like for the series now that Australia have taken the lead, and in that manner?

Australia’s odds, not surprisingly, have shortened to $1.57, where England are getting a much longer $4.33 to win the series. The bookies seem to reckon there will be a result either way, though, with the draw getting $5.00 on Sportsbet right now. But what else are you looking at in the markets? In terms of the series, you’ll get the same odds of $5.50 for Australia to win 3-1 as you will for a 2-2 draw, but we don’t think there will be too many Aussies taking that second one. Will there be many brave enough to take a $19.00 bet for a 5-0 Australia win? One thing’s for sure: with Jonathan Trott taking some time off to get himself better, he won’t feature in the series top runscorer markets – it’s David Warner who’s at the shortest odds right now at $3.50, with Aussie skipper Michael Clarke just behind him at $3.75. Is it a sign of the changing times that Alistair Cook is still the likeliest Englishman to take the top runscorer plaudits, but at $6.50?
