The Ashes: The Mind Games Have Started…

November 15th, 2013 by G Waldorf

It feels like there’s a lot going on in the world of cricket this week, with Sachin Tendulkar poised on 38 in what could be his last innings even as we write this, and England involved in another warm up game, this time in Sydney. But we’re excited by the most recent salvoes in the war of words that’s just adding to our anticipation of that first Test in Brisbane on the 21st.

We saw an article by former England captain Michael Vaughan that found its way into the Sydney Herald this morning. Shane Warne has been unsurprisingly outspoken. And Australian skipper Michael Clarke has weighed in with some catty comments of his own. Add in the spice about the sides Cricket Australia have picked for the warm-up games, and you’ve got a heady cocktail that’s getting us good and ready for the first ball of the series. No doubt it’s mostly out of context, and worked up by the press to mean more than it should, but we’re happy so long as it all adds to the drama in the first Test and through the series!

Meanwhile, more England batsmen have been enjoying Australian conditions in their most recent warm-up game (underway as we speak), and their bowlers have had a run-out, too – even though the game in Hobart was hit by rain and this one looks like it might be, as well. Have you seen anything that makes you think England might be worth a bet at $2.55 to win the first Test? What do you think of Australia’s chances at $2.50? We haven’t seen a weather forecast for Brisbane on the weekend of the 23rd and 24th, but if it’s not great, a draw could be a canny bet at $3.50. Time will tell, but in the meantime, we’re loving the war of words that’s shaping up: get all your latest Ashes odds here!
