AFL side Collingwood have taken American player Seamus McNamara under their wing as they look to build for the 2010 season.

The team recruited the 24-year-old rookie earlier this week after he completed a trial with the Magpies in September.

He returned over the weekend having accepted a contract offer and began pre-season training.

Collingwood’s national recruiting manager Derek Hine told collingwoodfc.com.au McNamara could become a ruck or key forward.

Hine said: "Seamus comes to the club with a unique skill set, having played basketball at an elite level and participated at a state level in soccer while at school.

"He is very driven and has impressed everyone at the club with his work ethic, and given Seamus' experiences at playing elite level sport we feel that he is deserving of the opportunity to forge a career in the AFL.”

Meanwhile, 'Pies captain Nick Maxwell has told the club website the team will be ready to put in a stronger challenge than 2009 when the new season starts.

"We're definitely in a better position," the 26-year-old said.

Collingwood are currently at 11.00 for the 2010 AFL Premiership at Sprotingbet's AFL betting market.
