The Pittsburg Steelers are used to being in contention to make the Superbowl, and after 9 games of the 2012 NFL season looked to be in with a chance again with a strong 6-3 record. However 5 reversals in the last 7 games gave them a distinctly average 8-8 record and they missed out on the Divisional Playoffs. The Tennessee Titans had a losing season in 2012 with a poor 6-10 record and had a very poor defense, allowing 471 points, and ranking 24th and 26th in the league for run and pass defense.

The Steelers have a great defense, finishing first in the league allowing just 276 yards per game, however their offense is well past it's best before date, and a tight game is on the cards here.

Steelers quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger has undergone knee surgery so is doubtful for this Round 1 season opener, and with 4 players around him drafted in the last 3 years, the fragile QB stands little chance of improving his woeful record of playing just one full season in his nine, yes nine year career. Pittsburg will almost certainly revert to a running game and indeed offensive coordinator Todd Haley has already talked up this element of the Steelers strategy.

The Titans need running back Chris Johnson to return to his 2009 form when he gained over 2000 yards. However the prospects of this happening seem slim, given he has failed to rush more than 1400 yards in any of the last 3 seasons.

Our big tip for this game is Titans + 6.5 at odds of $1.92. We actually think the Steelers will prevail, but the margin will be slim.

An illustration of how far the Steelers stars have fallen is that they can be backed at odds of $9.50 to win the AFC Championship when they would have once been strong second favourites behind the Patriots.

This is going to be a tight game, there is little value in backing the Steelers outright or even Steelers / Steelers, so a small wager on Titans / Titans as a value bet at odds of $6.00 is our recommendation. The price is too large.
