West Coast received a boost to their AFL odds this week after ruckman Dean Cox returned to pre-season training.

The Eagles began their summer schedule on Tuesday and welcomed Cox into a full session following his groin injury.

However, surgery has interrupted the preparations of youngsters Luke Shuey and Eric Mackenzie, with Shuey not expected to return for two to three weeks.

Mackenzie trained with the main squad on Tuesday but had shoulder surgery on Wednesday and is not expected to return until next month.

Shuey had minor hernia surgery on Monday, although assistant coach Daniel Metropolis underlined the problem was not linked to injuries which dogged the player last season.

Metropolis told the Eagles’ official website: "It looks like he might have tried to do a little too much (and) got a bit excited.

"But it's minor surgery and we expect in two or three weeks' time he'll be ready to start and get going again.

"[It's] disappointing for him, but we thought it was important to get it fixed now."

West Coast could be in for a tricky season according to the latest AFL odds at Sportsbet.

They are on 34.00 compared to the odds of joint favourites St Kilda and Geelong, both on 4.25.
