Caulfield Cup Racing Odds: The Nominations

September 3rd, 2014 by Pom de Turf

The nominations are in for the 2014 Caulfield Cup, and today sees the announcement of the handicaps. The field is star-studded, and includes a good portion of possible overseas raiders, so we thought today we’d take a look at some of the horses who will be in the headlines between now and the race on October 18th, and take a glance at how they’re likely to shape up in the Racing odds, too…

There are 221 horses nominated for the Caulfield Cup in 2014, with a record 44 overseas horses included. Those overseas raiders include last year’s runner-up Dandino as well as his stablemate Mount Athos. There are lots of well-known and well regarded trainers likely to be making the trip to the Melbourne Spring this year with international horses, too: Sir Michael Stoute will possibly bring Hillstar and Pether’s Moon, Aiden O’Brien could find himself in Australia for the first time in a while with Venus De Milo, and there are a number of Godolphin horses nominated who could carry their famous blue silks in the Caulfield Cup.

And hoping to make the long journey a fruitless one will be a strong field of local horses, led by early Melbourne Cup favourite The Offer, who is Gai Waterhouse’s best hope of a repeat of her 2013 Melbourne Cup success, and also her chance of collecting a repeat of a 2010 Caulfield Cup success. Throw into the mix Criterion, Fawkner, Silent Achiever, Our Voodoo Prince, Hawkspur, La Amistad, Sertorius and Lucia Valentina – very much amongst others – and you can see there’s a compelling contest shaping up. We, of course, have all the Racing odds for you at the end of the link, and we’ll be keeping you up to date with all the news as we get it!
