Caulfield Cup Racing Odds: The Weights Could Favour Japanese Imports

September 17th, 2014 by Pom de Turf

We’re getting a better look this week at how the Caulfield Cup is going to shape up, though there’s still a good while to go before October 18th rolls around. From the early Racing odds that we’re seeing (have a look yourself by hitting that link), and from a first look at the weights, the two Japanese horses in contention will be very popular with punters come Caulfield Cup day – and they could both be real chances to win it!

It’s an English prospect who gets the top weight – Mukhadram will carry 58kg if things stay as they are – and he’s ahead of Hong Kong champion Dan Excel with 57kg and Admire Rakti on the same 56kg as the winner of last year’s race, Fawkner. Admire Rakti’s fellow Japanese import Bande will carry 54.5kg unless there’s a change, and there’s a feeling that it’s those two who are the juiciest prospects for the Caulfield Cup with the weights as they have been announced this week. That’s probably because Mukhadram is a bit of an injury worry for the 2014 Caulfield Cup, and Dan Excel will most likely prioritise the Cox Plate – if those two are out of the running, then the two Japanese horses are likely to find themselves very much front and centre of punters’ thoughts, according to Racing Victoria’s Chief Handicapper Greg Carpenter: ‘Admire Rakti was outstanding in last year’s Japan Cup, he ran fourth to Gentildonna, beaten a length. He had a really good preparation run in the Hanshin Daishoten where he ran second to Gold Ship. Gold Ship is on his way to the Arc, he is one of the super stars of world racing. In that race Bande ran third and there was six lengths back to the rest of the field.’

Consider, too, Kiwi mare Silent Achiever, says Carpenter: ‘she was the dominant weight for age horse of the Sydney Autumn. She beat It’s A Dundeel in the BMW, she was great in the Ranvet and I’d love to see her at Caulfield on October 18 taking up the challenge in the Crown Golden Ale Caulfield Cup.’ We’d like to see that too – get all the Racing odds for the Caulfield Cup and more by hitting the link…
