Melbourne Cup: Favourite Puissance De Lune Will Carry 54.5kg

September 25th, 2013 by Pom de Turf

Currently the $5.50 favourite on Sportsbet, Puissance De Lune will carry 54.5kg in the Melbourne Cup come November 5th, and there will be more than a few pundits who see that as about right – based perhaps as much on his form as on the fact that the last three winners of the Cup have carried that same weight…

Puissance De Lune jockey Glen Boss took the news well: ‘He’s got a bit more than I thought but I’ve got massive respect for Greg Carpenter and his handicapping and the way he goes about things and his knowledge of racing, especially around the Melbourne Cup. He’s obviously got a healthy respect for my horse. I thought he would get 53.5kg. I hoped he would be 53.5kg. I expected 54kg. If he got 58 I’d be confident he’d run a super race, he’s that type of horse.’

The release of the weights last week caused the first real movement in the odds on offer for the fancied horses for 2013’s Cup – and you can see the full breakdown here: Melbourne Cup odds 2013. In summary, though, Puissance De Lune is still the favourite, at $5.50, followed by Fiorente at $8.00, Hawkspur at $13.00, Mount Athos and Sea Moon at $17.00 and a host of others at $21.00 and $26.00.
