Melbourne Cup Odds: A Couple Of Horses To Watch

November 1st, 2014 by Pom de Turf

The Melbourne Cup is just around the corner, and there will no doubt be plenty of punters poring over the Racing odds ahead of the big race. Not to mention all those Racing fans who are only Racing fans for the one day a year – all the fans that make the Melbourne Cup the biggest race in the world, and who will be looking to scoop some winnings into the bargain. But who will they be looking at for the 2014 race? We’ve got a few horses underlined on the back of an envelope on our desk here, and over the next few days we’re going to be drawing them to your attention. We’re not claiming any sort of intimate knowledge, you understand, or tipping these to be the horses that will have a big say in the race. You could do worse that have a look at these, though…

Fawkner ran sixth in last year’s Melbourne Cup, so he knows his way around the big race. He’s a veteran, too, and won’t be fazed by much these days. Add to that some pretty sizzling form in the 2014 Melbourne Spring, and you have a package that’s well worth a look: he ran a career best in the Cox Plate, and he looked like he was only getting stronger as they crossed the line. If he takes that form with him into Tuesday’s race, then he could be a chance. Look at him at $8.50 on Sportset right now.

Just behind Fawkner in those Racing odds as of today, and into odds of double figures but not by much (he’s a $12.00 bet if you fancy him) is Mutual Regard. History would suggest that things won’t go in Mutual Regard’s favour: he’s an Ebor winner this year, but that’s not usually a good guide of Melbourne Cup potential. Which is a shame, because this is an eye-catching horse who comes to the race in what looks like very good condition, and he’s seeing a fair few punters putting their hopes behind him.

So there are a couple of the major players in the 2014 Melbourne Cup that you should take a little look at, we think – why not check back in for more over the next couple of days?
