Melbourne Cup Odds: Derby Day Run Has Precedence

October 30th, 2014 by Pom de Turf

Bart Cummings seems to us like a man who knows how to win a Melbourne Cup. When you’ve done something 12 times already, a pattern is going to start emerging, and it looks like Cummings will be looking to repeat the pattern with Precedence before the 2014 Melbourne Cup. His prospect has a decent $67.00 beside his name in the Racing odds on Sportsbet as of today for the big race, but with a well-worn path to success to follow, it could be that that represents value.

That path would take Precedence to the Mackinnon Stakes on VRC Derby Day, and it would need to be a run that helps him come to The Race That Stops A Nation at the top of his game if he’s going to bring Cummings another win – he has run three Melbourne Cups to date, and never finished inside the first seven home. Cummings was understandably playing down the prospects of Precedence storming home to win it, but we thought we could detect a note of excitement from the veteran trainer, as well: ‘Precedence’s going all right for his age. I believe he is just about in the Melbourne Cup, so it would be good to have a runner again. I’d like to get the baker’s dozen of Melbourne Cups. We may nominate for the Mackinnon and as long as he’s OK in the next few days, we will head towards the Melbourne Cup. Precedence doesn’t know how old he is — he can’t read! He is a sound horse, that’s the key. It’s hard to get them as sound as he is at his age. He’s never done too much racing, either, we’ve looked after him so that all helps. Although no nine-year-old has won it, there is always a first time. And what do they say? You’ve got to be in it to win it.’

So when you’re looking over those Racing odds between now and the 2014 Melbourne Cup, make sure you keep an eye out for Precedence. You’ll get a chance to see him in action on Derby Day, it sounds like, and if you like what you see, there might be value in the veteran stayer…
