Melbourne Cup Racing Odds: Big European Stables Well Represented

September 12th, 2014 by Pom de Turf

We’ve already highlighted in these pages some of the key Australian horses who will be most likely to have a say in the 2014 Melbourne Cup, and we’ve talked about the Australia-based trainers who will have a huge impact on the race – a look at the Racing odds at the other end of that link will show you that Gai Waterhouse’s The Offer is the early favourite for The Race That Stops A Nation, but Lloyd Williams and her big rival Chris Waller both have a dozen horses each amongst the nominations, and you’d think that probably means they’ll have reason to attend.

And there will be some high-profile stables sending horses over to Australia from all around the world (the Godolphin stables, for instance), but today we’re going to highlight some prestigious European outfits who will most likely be represented in the 2014 Melbourne Cup. Starting with perhaps the most famous: Queen Elizabeth II’s stayer Estimate is in the mix for the Melbourne Spring this year, and looking like bringing some decent form along, too. Aiden O’Brien hasn’t been back to the Melbourne Cup since he left under something of a cloud in 2008, but he could be well represented by Kingfisher, who placed behind stablemate Australia in the Irish Derby in June. Dermot Weld will be searching for an impressive third Melbourne Cup triumph, and his hopes rest on Pale Mimosa, who was most recently seen beating home Estimate and Godolphin’s Cavalryman at York in August. Add trainers like Johnny Murtagh and Marco Botti to the mix, and you can see that the VIP areas for the Melbourne Cup will be full of star European trainers: watch out for their horses in the Racing odds that we’ve got for you – are you backing the local horses, or can you see an overseas raider romping home?
