Melbourne Cup Racing Odds: Hopes High For Van Percy

August 6th, 2014 by Pom de Turf

In June, 4-year-old stayer Van Percy changed hands, moving to OTI Racing – and you’d think he was bought with the Melbourne Spring very much in mind. If that is the case, and Van Percy is going to be aimed at the Melbourne Cup come November, then his new owners will be well pleased with his form, and he’ll start to feature more heavily in the Racing odds for the Melbourne Spring if he can turn in a couple more wins…

Van Percy ran a tough race to win the Summer Handicap at Goodwood last week, and the win didn’t just put him into the wider picture for the Melbourne Cup, it will have pleased his trainers no end. Andrew Balding is the man in charge: ‘he’s tough, not very big, but all heart. With a penalty he’s now likely to get into the Ebor and that’s an obvious target. It’s within the quarantine timings so it works out really well. OTI bought a major share in him with that (the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival) in mind. Whatever happens, as long as he’s healthy, he’ll go down to Australia in the first quarantine group. He’s going to have to go up another 10lb or so to even get into the Melbourne Cup. He’s likely to have another couple of runs for me in Australia, maybe in something like the Geelong Cup first and then I think he’ll probably stay down there. There’s also the Caulfield Cup to think about.’

So: ambitious plans for Van Percy, which suggest that his trainer and his owners rate high pretty highly. He’s currently seeing odds of $51.00 for the Melbourne Cup on Sportsbet – so perhaps have a glance at him and the rest of those Racing odds by clicking the link.
