Melbourne Cup Racing Odds: Pale Mimosa Out?

September 19th, 2014 by Pom de Turf

We’ve been seeing conflicting news reports over the past couple of weeks about a 2014 Melbourne Cup start for Pale Mimosa, and the bottom of the story has still to be reached, it looks like, with her camp assessing their options and Racing Victoria still keen for her to make the trip if she can. Certainly, she’s likely to be a player in the Racing odds at the end of that there link if she does go into quarantine, but this might be a case of wait and see, given some mixed messages from her handlers…

The result putting the trip in doubt was an unsuccessful Irish St Leger run that saw her land up in seventh place – and concerns playing on trainer Dermot Weld’s mind that firm ground simply doesn’t suit Pale Mimosa. It’s a long way, of course, to bring a horse to run on ground that doesn’t suit her, and you can understand that whilst Weld was happy to keep his options open with a nomination, he’s going to think very carefully indeed before Plae Mimosa gets on a plane.

But last month’s Lonsdale Cup win for Pale Mimosa looks like it has put a 2014 Melbourne Cup appearance very much back on the table. Immediately after the race, Weld was cautious about what he told the press, but obviously up-beat about his prospect’s chances: ‘we will see about (coming for the Melbourne Cup). The problem is she loves a bit of ease in the track and the surface today was beautiful. We will sit down and discuss her plans but she is a wonderful staying mare.’ Pale Mimosa will definitely be a feature of the Racing odds we’ve got for you if she makes the trip to Australia for the Melbourne Cup – but we’re going to need to watch and wait to see if she does, it looks like…
