Melbourne Cup Racing Odds: Red Cadeaux Back In Work

August 7th, 2014 by Pom de Turf

The Melbourne Cup is a huge event, and it’s always a pleasure to see horses arriving in Australia from all around the world to make a bid for a win in The Race That Stops A Nation. What’s also great to see, though, is those horses who are in the running in the Melbourne Cup for a number of years – those horses that are good enough to run at the highest level year after year, and that will feature in the Racing odds as November comes around again this year. One of those horses is the veteran Red Cadeaux, who is aiming for a fourth straight run in the Melbourne Cup.

Red Cadeaux has been the bridesmaid in the Melbourne Cup on two separate occasions, and trainer Ed Dunlop will be hoping that this is his year for a win – one that you’d say would be well-deserved. 2011 was Red Cadeaux’s debut Melbourne Cup run, and he was beaten by the narrowest of margins by Dunaden. He was back the next year to run a decent eighth place, and last year saw another heartbreaking second behind Fiorente. Will it be fourth time the charm for Red Cadeaux? Ed Dunlop is certainly not talking up his charge’s prospects as he gets into work before the Melbourne Spring: ‘he has had a long break since Japan, where he had a bad experience; the ground was very firm and he got very jarred up. He’s back working and he’ll have one prep-run, maybe two before going back to Australia all being well. At his age, I don’t think he should be running in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup. Ronnie has an infatuation with winning the race, but I’ve been advised that they are struggling to get a top weight, which worries me. We don’t want to be carrying top weight.’

Dunlop might be working on managing expectations as much as he’s working on managing Red Cadeaux, but the fact remains that he’s a stayer of proven quality who will be in the mix again this November, and in the Racing odds for the Melbourne Cup…
