Melbourne Spring Odds: Cup Hopefuls Target Lexus Stakes

October 30th, 2014 by Pom de Turf

There are an incredible 15 horses looking to buy themselves a ticket to the 2014 Melbourne Cup when they line up in the Lexus Stakes at the weekend, and that alone would make it well worth looking at when you’re sizing up the Racing odds as we go through the Melbourne Spring this year, and as the biggest race of the calendar creeps closer.

So there will be lots of eyes trained on the Lexus Stakes when they jump off at Flemington on Saturday, and plenty of them will be keeping Caravan Rolls On in sharp focus – he’s a horse with a recent win behind him, and he’s tantalisingly close to the final field of the Melbourne Cup, but probably going to need a ticket from somewhere to make sure he runs. If he does manage to squeak into the Melbourne Cup, he could be worth having a look at in the Racing odds, especially if you’re inclined to trust the opinion of trainer Danny O’Brien: ‘we’ve been very fortunate to have him. We’ve had him for better part of a year now and it’s been a long plan to get him to a Melbourne Cup. Fortunately he got the job done, it was only his third start in a year. There is a hell of a lot of improvement to come and hopefully he gets into the Melbourne Cup. He is a genuine two miler. We had to keep him very fresh today for the 2400m. At two miles he will improve two or three lengths.’

And there are worse times, of course, to show improvement for a horse who’s going to be a player in the Melbourne Cup. If that improvement comes, and if Caravan Rolls On can get to the sort of levels O’Brien would like, then he could be well worth keeping an eye on – in the Lexus Stakes first of all, and then just maybe in the Melbourne Cup, too…
