Melbourne Spring Odds: Foreteller Takes Underwood Stakes

October 2nd, 2014 by Pom de Turf

Chris Waller had a weekend to relish the week before last, with a couple of big winners coming home within minutes of each other. The first was Sacred Falls in the George Main Stakes, and then Foreteller put in a strong performance to take the Underwood Stakes a State away, confirming both as horses to watch in the Racing odds as we go through the Melbourne Spring…

Foreteller had been without a winning outing for more than a year going into the Underwood Stakes, which was run at a decent tempo thanks to Crackerjack King’s efforts in the early stages, but Glen Boss, onboard for the race, was impressed with the way he went out and won it, and more than a little pleased to find himself in the saddle: ‘it is just great to be a part of it and great to be a part of this horse. I have only been on him twice, but I really enjoy his charisma and he is a pretty groovy horse to ride. He put himself in a good spot today from the barrier and he just kept creeping into the race. He is a tricky horse, you need to keep the bit in his mouth as long as possible because you can nullify his sprint if you go too soon on him. It just worked out great there. This is an important race here for the spring and an important race for me, it has been a long time in between drinks for me in Group 1’s. I am just thrilled to be given the opportunity by Chris to ride a quality individual like this. You just have to admire this horse’s courage.’

And whilst Boss might have enjoyed the ride, Chris Waller’s representative in Melbourne, Justine Hales, admitted to being worried by the pace of the race. It all turned out just fine for Foreteller, of course, and Hales was upbeat when she spoke to the press afterwards: ‘it is lovely to see this horse win again. He always tries and he is very honest. I was a little bit worried today because he was handier than usual and I was hoping that he could sprint. I think it was good that the other horse came back a bit and he caught Happy Trails on the outside of his eye and he kept trying.’

And one thing’s for certain after that Underwood Stakes win: Foreteller is going to be a name that we see again in the Racing odds for big races in the Melbourne Spring. Hit the link there for those odds and more, and visit us again for news updates!
