Melbourne Spring Racing Odds: Lankan Rupee Back In Action
September 8th, 2014 by Pom de TurfHere’s one to watch: Lankan Rupee makes the first appearance of his 2014 Melbourne Spring Campaign at the weekend. A horse who’s very much used to winning, Lankan Rupee is considered by many to be the very best sprints horse in the world, and the 5-year-old will be out to show his wares on Saturday. If he comes home as well as his handlers hope, he’ll be very much a fixture of the Racing odds we’ll be seeing for the shorter races in this year’s Spring Festival…
And whilst trainer Mick Price might be quietly confident that Lankan Rupee can build on an incredibly successful Autumn campaign, his jockey for Saturday’s McEwan Stakes, Craig Newitt, is prepared to be loudly confident: ‘Lankan Rupee is a deadset star sprinter, primed right up for this sprint race. I’d say he’ll come out and win this weekend and then I’d say he will remain unbeaten, at least in Australia. He doesn’t have to get any better to remain unbeaten in Australia. He’s as good now as he was last campaign and he’s only just starting off. He trialled on the wet at Cranbourne and I didn’t let him go, he had a jump out at Caulfield in the fog and I pressed the button a little and he responded and he went to the Valley on Tuesday and he was simply smoking.’
Sounds like a confident man will be in the saddle for Lankan Rupee on Saturday, and he’s definitely not the only one expecting great things from the star sprinter at the start of the Spring Festival. We’ll be watching, and we’ll have one eye on those Racing odds, too…
