Racing Odds: Cavalryman The Right Horse The For Melbourne Cup

September 12th, 2014 by Pom de Turf

One of the horses travelling to Australia for the Melbourne Cup who has already caught the eye of pundits and punters is Cavalryman, and he will be an eye-catching sight on the day, too, if he runs – he’ll be sporting some very famous blue silks that mark him out as a horse from the Godolphin stables.

Take a little look at the Racing odds, and you’ll notice that Cavalryman is in amongst the shorter odds at this early stage, and Godolphin will be hoping he’s the horse to break something of a luckless streak for them in Melbourne Cups: the stable has had three second places in the The Race That Stops A Nation, but never claimed the trophy. For the 2014 edition of the Melbourne Cup, they’ve obviously thought hard about the sort of horse that is most likely to bring them the success they crave, and Cavalryman’s trainer Saeed Bin Suroor thinks that he fits the bill very nicely indeed: ‘we have three times been second in the Melbourne Cup and you need a class horse these days. In the old days you would think about a handicapper and their weight, but now you need a Group 1 or 2 horse who will go and do the job for you there. For the Melbourne Cup you need a 2400-metre horse with class and a turn of foot for 1200 metres as they go fast, slow and then fast again in the Cup and that is different to here in the UK. Cavalryman has the class and has won on all types of ground and we know the track at Flemington suits him.’

The Melbourne Cup is familiar territory for Cavalryman, who ran in 12th in last year’s race, but his form this year has been better than at any time in his career, and the 8-year-old will be a real chance when November 4th comes around – check him out in those Racing odds by following the link…
