Racing Odds: Havana Beat Looks To Melbourne Cup

July 8th, 2014 by Pom de Turf

We had a little look yesterday at Eclair Big Bang, an exciting horse over shorter distances that will be making preparations for a Spring campaign and looking to pick up the first really big wins of his career. But the biggest prizes of the Melbourne Spring Season – including the Melbourne Cup itself – are reserved for the stayers. Have a look at the Racing odds for yourself by hitting that there link – and look out for Havana Beat whilst you’re there…

Mark Mariscotti – Havana Beat’s owner – is keen to be involved in the Melbourne Spring, and keen to have a runner in the big race. And with a decent record of runs over the longer distances building behind him, Havana Beat looks to be a big prospect. He’s a horse that has made appearances at some big events, too: this year was his second at Royal Ascot, and he produced a good run in the Gold Cup without success before picking up a win in the Listed Sandown Park Coral Marathon soon after. Significantly, that win was over a similar distance to the Melbourne Cup, and trainer Andrew Balding is aware of the comparison: ‘(the Melbourne Cup) would be a possibility. He’s ideally suited by a big field and a strong gallop. He’ll go to the Ebor first.’ That’s the Ebor Handicap in York in August, and it will be a decent indication of where Havana Beat is in his preparations for a trip to these shores. Keep an eye out for Havana Beat’s name when you’re looking over those Racing odds, it could be that he’s in the mix for the Melbourne Cup come November…
