Racing Odds: Jet Away Cox Plate Hopeful

After a fourth-placed finish in the 2013 Caulfield Cup, things looked to be going well for Jet Away, but there was disappointment for trainer David Hayes when his charge suffered a tendon injury in the Mackinnon Stakes. We haven’t seen much of Jet Away since then, but we’re hearing now that he’s back to good health and looking to make an impact on the Melbourne Spring Carnival, with the Cox Plate being targeted in particular.

Jet Away was the favourite going into the Mackinnon Stakes run that ended in injury, and it must have been a frustratingly long process for the trainer to get him back to full health. Last year’s targets were the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup itself, but a year on it looks like Hayes might have re-assessed his options, and shifted his sights to the Cox Plate: ‘the Cox Plate looks ideal for him because the pace will be on and he showed me in the Turnbull (Stakes) that he was right up to the class, he should’ve nearly beaten Happy Trails that day. It just depends on how he races. The way he was racing last Spring, I think he’d be a very good horse for either. I’m really happy with him and you wouldn’t know that he’s had a tendon injury.’

It all sounds positive at this stage, and it’s worth remembering that Jet Away was widely backed going into the Caulfield Cup last year, and that he ran a race that left him with more admirers than he’d had before. Obviously the injury has to be considered, but keep an eye on those Racing odds to see if Jet Away’s name appears anywhere at a price you like the look of…
