Racing Odds: Red Cadeaux A Caulfield Cup Option

September 5th, 2014 by Pom de Turf

A fixture in recent Melbourne Cups, Red Cadeaux has been in amongst the Racing odds for The Race That Stops A Nation for the past three years – and could well be back for another shot in 2014. But what path will the veteran take through the Melbourne Spring this year? All three of those previous Melbourne Cup runs have been without a preparatory run on Australian soil, but this year, things could be arranged a bit differently, according to trainer Ed Dunlop: ‘Gerald Mosse wanted to give him another run before he left and it gives us the option of going into quarantine one or quarantine two. There is the Caulfield Cup, the Geelong Cup and whatever options one wants to think off. Half of me says why try that when we have done so well without doing it, but this is a different style of campaign. He didn’t run well in the Irish St Leger last year and there aren’t many options for this horse after Saturday. It is a difficult one to answer, so let’s see what happens and then we will make a decision. We are planning to into quarantine the first time, but obviously we can change that.’

So the plan is to bring Red Cadeaux over to Australia with the first wave of overseas imports, after he’s had a run in the September Stakes at Kempton in the UK. After that, Dunlop has that choice he’s talking about in front of him, and we’ll see what he opts for. Whatever happens, it’ll be interesting to see how the extra run in Australia affects the Racing odds for Red Cadeaux – Dunlop sounds happy with him in terms of form, so we’ll have to see how he goes: ‘he did his final piece of work this morning before he runs at Kempton on Saturday and I was very happy with it. More importantly Steve who has ridden him around the world was also happy and fingers crossed all remains good for him on Saturday. I am very happy with the way that he is, his demeanour is good and he seems bright and well. He is a very fresh horse coming into the second half of the season.’
