Racing Odds: Sea Moon Straight To The Melbourne Cup

October 16th, 2014 by Pom de Turf

It looks like Sea Moon will head straight to the Melbourne Cup after his run in the Bart Cummings a couple of weekends ago. The veteran overseas stayer didn’t turn in a performance at Flemington that has set his Melbourne Spring alight, but he’s almost certain to feature in the Racing odds for the Melbourne Cup in November, and he’ll go into that race with a few weeks’ freshness in his legs.

Sea Moon’s owner Lloyd Williams seemed like a man who had his plans set before the Bart Cummings, and a slightly disappointing run likely won’t change them at all. He spoke to the press before the race at Flemington: ‘he is in good order. People are a bit confused that he is first-up at 2500 metres, but it is not unusual for an English horse like this. I think that he is a lot better than he was 12 months ago, he has taken 12 months to acclimatise and I thought that we would give him more of a traditional English program. He will probably have this race and go straight into the Melbourne Cup. The cupboard is quite light for our Melbourne Cup horses, we put a lot of horses aside, and Sea Moon is the hope of the stable. We will see how he runs tomorrow, but from everything he is showing us at home we are very happy with him.’ The Sea Moon camp were aware of the stiff challenge to their charge from the eventual Bart Cummings Stakes winner Who Shot Thebarman, too: ‘Who Shot Thebarman is obviously in very good form and he is getting two and a half kilos from him so he is the logical pick in the race, but I think that he will run well tomorrow, Sea Moon. I certainly hope that he runs well because he is the sort of horse that I would like to see going towards the 3200 metres in four weeks’ time.’

So if Williams gets his way, it’ll be the Melbourne Cup next for Sea Moon, but he’ll go to The Race That Stops A Nation with lots to prove – which will likely be reflected in the Racing odds at the other end of the link there.
