Spring Season Racing Odds: Elwaaryya Makes Australian Debut

August 7th, 2014 by Pom de Turf

She may have been purchased and brought to Australia mostly to breed, but French mare Elwaaryya looks like she might get a season of racing under her belt this year, and also looks like she could feature in the Racing odds as we get closer to the Melbourne Spring.

Elwaaryya (which is just the ideal name for us to have to learn to spell, so spare a little thought…) completed her first run on Australian soil in a creditable sixth place – it was the catchily-named Advanced Mailing Solutions Handicap at Moonee – but trainer Mick Price thought before the race that the 1600m of that first race on our shores might not be the most comfortable distance for her: ‘it will be interesting to see how she gets around Moonee Valley, but she’s got to start somewhere and I thought this was a suitable race ratings-wise for her to kick off in. While a mile suits to make her debut in Australia, she works like a mare that wants 2000 metres.’

Whether it was the distance that didn’t quite suit, or if there’s a little bit of settling in for Elwaaryya to do before she shows her best form in Australia, Saturday’s race didn’t really tell us. Whatever happens, it’s probably worth keeping an eye out for that distinctive name in the Racing odds as the Melbourne Spring creeps closer. With a limited number of seasons of racing likely on the cards, Elwaaryya’s owners will want to see some success from her: ‘she is one of Robert Harding’s mares that he will be breeding from, purchased by Sheamus Mills from the Arqana Sale in France,’ says Price. ‘She was bought to be a broodmare, hopefully with a view to being successful on the racecourse here and get some Australian form. We’re using the month of August to determine whether we go another year or not.’

So keep an eye out for Elwaaryya in those Racing odds that are sitting at the end of the link, if only because she has a fantastic name, we’ve gone to the trouble of spelling it for you…
