Spring Season Racing Odds: Silent Achiever Looking Strong

August 27th, 2014 by Pom de Turf

In a run-out ahead of the Memsie Stakes this weekend, Silent Achiever didn’t put a foot wrong, and trainer Roger James can afford to be well pleased with his prospect’s progress ahead of a Melbourne Spring Season in which she could have a big impact on the Racing odds.

On the course proper at Cambridge in New Zealand, Silent Achiever put in a good 1200m, and James was pleased to talk to the press about her chances in the Spring: ‘the main aim is the Melbourne Cup and we have set our sights on peaking on the day. It is just a matter of which way we go to get there in the best order. The Caulfield Cup is going to be a tempting one because I do think at this stage of her career that the mile and a half has looked like her best trip. She has won a BMW and she has won a Derby all at the distance. If she gets a little bit of weight I might go Cox Plate way and not risk a re-handicap for the Melbourne Cup. A lot is going to determine on how she is racing and the weights she gets allotted.’

Silent Achiever was a runner in the Memsie Stakes last year, but failed to make a real impact, with just two horses trailing her across the line. James is keen to put that behind her, and in a little bit of context: ‘after this morning’s workout I would think that she is in very similar order (to last year). I was happy with her coming into the race last year and she was checked off the heels of runners in the last furlong of the race; she looked really as though she should have grabbed a placing in the race had she had a clear chance. I am happy with the order that she is in. The trial undoubtedly brought her forward and she worked this morning on our course proper and it was without doubt the best work of her preparation. I thought her work had that sparkle to it this morning, which probably until now her work has been solid without that. The trial last week did the job for us and not only did she work well this morning, but she pulled up terrific. It is a lovely way to be coming on the plane really.’

So positive things coming from trainer Roger James about Silent Achiever, and she looks very much like she is going to be a real contender in the 2014 Melbourne Spring, especially if she can find the sort of form the trainer wants out of her. Hers is a name you’ll be seeing in the newspapers and in the Racing odds, so keep an eye out!
