World Cup: Fewer Than 100 Days To Go, Socceroos Odds At $501.00

March 11th, 2014 by G Waldorf

We’re into the final hundred days before the World Cup in Brazil kicks off and all the TV cameras on the planet are pointed in that direction (that’s how it feels, anyway, with these tournaments) – there are 95 days, in fact, between now and Australia’s first game, against Chile at Cuiaba. The stadium might not have been ready on schedule, but the organisers will be hoping it’s the finished article by the time the first game hosted there comes around. And the same could be said for the Socceroos, who will be one of the sides in that first game when they take on Chile and start their fight to get out of the ‘group of death’.

Australia’s preparations seem to be going well: Tim Cahill set a new record high for goals scored in the gold jersey, and the young squad have come on considerably in the last few months. The only thing missing against Ecuador was the result, which went against the Socceroos thanks to a frail second half display that saw the South American side overhaul a three goal deficit to take the win. Now, you might well say that it isn’t the result that’s the important thing in these fixtures, which inevitably amount to a warm-up act for the World Cup, but the Socceroos will want to be able to take some confidence, at least, into their first game in 2014’s tournament, in which they will face odds of $6.00. That’s probably not high enough to put us off having a little punt on them, of course, (patriotic folk that we are), but if they can’t overcome those odds and sneak a win, then it will make for potentially difficult watching when Australia meet Spain and The Netherlands

In case you were wondering, a draw in the first game is a $3.75 bet on Sportsbet right now, and you’ll get $1.53 if you’re backing Chile. We’ll be keeping an eye on the odds as the days tick down, and we’ll be taking a look in more detail at the teams in Group B with Australia, as well as keeping you up-to-date with the news as it breaks. So keep an eye out for these blogs, and make sure you visit Sportsbet for your Socceroos odds, and some World Cup Specials, too…
