An Irish seven-year-old trained by L M Cumani in the UK, Mount Athos already has experience of the Cup, finishing in an impressive fifth place in last year’s race – and the consensus is that he’s been improving since then. He’ll carry 54kg in the Melbourne Cup, and will likely rely on a good turn of pace (one that’s been developing, too) to register a good finish. He had a run at Ascot in the Hardwicke Stakes, finishing adrift of another Melbourne Cup 2013 hopeful – Dandino – but not disappointing expectations by any means. In fact, with Dandino at $26.00 for the Cup in November, the feeling is that Mount Athos has come past him, and he’s sitting at$15.00 as a result.
