World Cup Odds: Spotlight on Bresciano

April 16th, 2014 by G Waldorf

Socceroos fans – at least those who have reached a certain age – have fond memories of Mark Bresciano. He wasn’t our best player in the run-up to the 2006 World Cup tournament, but he put in some powerful performances in Germany – and was part of a side that stood up heroically to the Brazilians and the Italians – that made him a popular figure with Australia fans. And he went on to have an impressive career with the Socceroos, a key part of the generation that many have suggested has as good a claim as any to be the best that Australia has seen.

But that golden generation has had its day, and Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglu is the man who’s overseeing a time of transition, and the emergence – we hope – of another strong crop of players in the green and gold jerseys. Those young Socceroos have a steep hill to climb at the World Cup in Brazil, and the odds are definitely against them (check out all Australia’s World Cup odds by following the link). Mark Bresciano has been there before, and found the net 13 times in 73 appearances for the Socceroos, so he’s the sort of cool head who could do a good job of steadying the youngsters, but will he be a part of the squad announced in May?

There’s no guaranteed place for Bresciano, and that’s exactly the way it should be, but the veteran has been short of game time after a ban the left him marooned on the sidelines, so he’s got it all to do to get back in the side. Looking on Sportsbet right now you’ll see that Bresciano is a $1.80 bet to be named in the side to face Chile in Australia’s first game of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
