World Cup: Postecoglu Getting Closer to Socceroos Side

March 27th, 2014 by G Waldorf

It’s been a busy week for Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglu, with the Asian Cup draw taking attention away from the process of making sure he’s putting together his best squad for the FIFA World Cup. That’s a tough-enough task, given the outlook for Australia – have a look at all of Australia’s World Cup odds by following the link – but we like Postecoglu’s attitude, and we suspect he’s got at least one eye on the future. It might not work out how some of Australian soccer’s greatest servants would like, but Postecoglu seems to have a brave new era in mind: Harry Kewell has already ruled himself out, and there could be disappointment ahead for players like Lucas Neill and Mark Bresciano who have worn the Australia jersey so proudly and for so long.

So Postegoclu has been telling the press that he has an eye on between 40 and 45 players who will be on the long list for the 2014 World Cup squad. Expect that list to be pruned to 30 players on May 15th, and it will be 23 on June 6th – the squad that will contest the World Cup for Australia. It might be odd to think of the World Cup as a precursor to other things, but the reality is that the Socceroos will be gaining experience at this World Cup rather than trying to win it, and Postecoglu has a decent dose of that reality in his planning, from the look of things. Expect us to take a closer look over the next few weeks at all the teams that his emerging Socceroos squad will face at the World Cup, and a couple that they might bump into if they somehow get out of Group B. In the meantime, there’s a friendly against South Africa coming up that will no doubt give us a better idea of the side and the way the Socceroos intend to play – that’s on May 26th.
