Mark Kavanagh is looking to build on his outstanding spring by seeing if middle-distance specialist Raffaello can can go the distance in the 2400m Sandown Classic.

The trainer, who prepared Melbourne Cup winner Shocking, thinks the five-year-old Raffaello has shown enough good form to suggest he could have a shot at a longer run.

He won over 2000m at Flemington on Saturday on the last day of the carnival and is said to have recovered well from the victory.

Kavanagh said: "You never know until you try them but he's in good order, very fit and he ate up everything last night so as long as he does well during the week, it might be worth a try."

Michael Rodd partnered the entire on Saturday – but won't be able to ride him at Sandown as he is already committed to piloting the horse who could be Raffaello's main rival in the Classic.

Zipping, owned by Lloyd Williams, is going for his third straight victory in the $350,000m group 2 race.

Win or lose with Raffaello on Saturday, Kavanagh has already successfully completed one of the great season turnarounds in horse racing.

He had to scratch favourite Shamoline Warrior from the Victoria Derby due to a virus and saw hot favourite Whobegotyou fail in the Cox Plate, but then took the Melbourne Cup and a host of other wins during the carnival.
