Both Gilbert Melendez and Diego Sanchez know about winning, inside and outside the Octagon. Sanchez, if your memory goes back that far, was the middleweight winner of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, and he has since gone on to establish himself as a top-rate UFC fighter, with a strong record behind him. He might not be right at the top of the division, but he’s widely regarded as one of the most exciting UFC fighters around, and his recent form earns him a shot at Melendez.

For his part, Melendez is coming off the back of a fiercely-contested bout against Benson Henderson that saw him lose in a tight points decision. He possibly wouldn’t have expected to face Sanchez as his next opponent, but this is a fight that gives him a chance to re-establish himself as a genuine title contender, and that’s an opportunity that he’ll want to grab with both hands. Expect to see Melendez with the edge in the striking department, while Sanchez will feel he has the advantage in the grapple. Melendez has yet to submitted in his career, though, and you’d feel that not only will we enjoy this fight the longer it goes, the balance might tilt towards a Melendez win, too...
