Jon Jones is the consummate champion. He’s been busy setting records – and in some style – for a long time now. Many rate him as the best pound-for-pound fighter around, and they have a long list of traits to back their claims. He’s an incredibly skilful fighter, and in great shape – capable of taking on and beating the best in the UFC in any area of the sport. He grapples well, and his footwork and fast hands have seen him match the best when he’s on his feet. So he definitely deserves his short odds of $1.13. But could Gustafsson be the man to cause an upset on September 22nd, and end a record run of five consecutive title defences?

Gustafsson is a genuine talent. He comes close to matching the champion in size and reach, and he has enough skills to trouble any fighter in the division, Jones included. In particular, his footwork is a strength, and if he has the chance to take the fight to Jones then he will find himself in a real fight, and in with a shout of winning it, too. But there is real danger for Gustafsson, who is on the back of six wins – an impressive run by any standards – when he goes toe-to-toe with Jones. The champion’s biggest advantage is likely to be in the grapple, and Jones is well able to effect a takedown from anywhere in the Octagon, and from often surprising positions. If the fight does go to the ground, then Gustafsson’s odds of $5.40 might start to look short, if anything, but if he can boss the fight instead of Jones, then he might be worth a shout at those odds. You’ll get $2.24 for Jones to win by submission: if Gustafsson wins it by submission, the odds are $19.75!

Look out for more news, odds and especially some interesting markets next week – this could be a great fight, and we’ll be looking to have a bet on it, too!
