Most of the UFC fans who tune in to watch this one will do so because of the trail that Brandon Thatch has blazed to get to this point, and his opponent Paulo Thiago is a $3.26 outside bet to win the fight for the same reason. And Thatch does come with some explosive wins behind him. He’s only seen one defeat in his professional career, a split decision back in 2008, and he burst onto the UFC scene with a victory over Justin Edwards in August. But it’s the manner of that win, and the others, that have him as a $1.31 favourite for this fight. The split decision defeat is the only time he’s been taken out of the first round by any opponent, and his knockout of Edwards earned him Knockout of the Night honours. His power is really something to see, and he’s an athletic, devastating fighter who makes for good box office. There will be plenty of people writing Paulo Thiago off before they even get into the Octagon.

But Thiago is a canny veteran. He has five losses in his career, but they’ve all come in his time in the UFC – they’ve all come against the very best opponents out there. If there is anything that you can say about Paulo Thiago it’s that he is not an easy man to score a win against. That doesn’t mean that it hasn’t happened, of course, or that it won’t happen again on the 10th, but you can expect Thiago to make life difficult for Thatch on the night. The other thing you can say about Thatch is that you don’t want to go to ground with him, and whilst Thatch could be the man to inflict the first submission defeat of Thiago’s career, it’s likely that Thiago’s gameplan will be to tire Thatch in the grapple and hope to push him into making a mistake. Bear that in mind when you’re looking for a bet to make on this one: we like the look of a submission either way at $6.05, but also of a Brandon Thatch victory by KO at $1.70.
