In a busy Middleweight division, this could be a really decisive fight. It will certainly be an important night for Luke Rockhold and Costa Philippou, who are both fighters who are looking to get themselves moving again after recent disappointments. Rockhold will have some bad memories of a knockout at the hands of Vitor Belfort to put behind him, where Philippou will be keen to move past a decision loss to Francis Carmont. It could well be that the manner of those defeats goes a long way to deciding how this fight pans out on the 16th.

It was a headkick – one of three knockouts Belfort pulled off with similar manoeuvres in 2013 – that finished Rockhold, but it was in the first round: and that means that Rockhold will come out on the 16th with all guns blazing, looking to dominate and to really make a point. Philippou, on the other hand, went all the way to the end of round three before the decision went against him. He has never gone 25 minutes in his career (Rockhold has, twice), and it will inevitably start to play on his mind if this one starts to look like it will go the distance. Especially since there seems to be a concern in more than a few quarters about Philippou’s conditioning. It’s difficult to say how he will fare in the last couple of rounds if the fight gets there, but the consensus is that it might be hard for him.

All that adds up to the odds you can see above – and the $1.22 favourite tag that Rockhold carries into the fight. Have a look, too, at the markets on offer on Sportsbet between now and the 16th: it might be that there’s better value on offer there than you’ll find in backing either of these two outright...
